Anybody might think that there is an election in the offing…!

Well for Chineham parish voters this will be a three in one election next May when seats come up for Chineham Parish Council, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and parliament. Taylor's Farm residents (as part of Sherfield-on-Loddon parish) have only Chineham Ward and parliamentary votes to cast.  Will electors be looking at party performance or that of individual representatives? Our Conservative MP has had something of a rocky ride of late, but so has the Conservative cabinet at borough council level.

Thankfully party politics do not generally figure in parish elections, as I suggest should also be the case for all levels of local government. The case is, of course, rather different at national level, where this year there is likely to be a rather lively contest for the Basingstoke seat. Will the local electorate "forgive and forget" Maria Millar's shameful expenses misbehaviour? So far, only four candidates have disclosed an intention to stand. Her strongest challenger is undoubtedly local Labour councillor Paul Harvey.
