Aims

I am a true 100% unfettered INDEPENDENT.

This gives me the ability to represent local residents in a way which removes all obligations to ANY political party.

In performing this role I face the challenge of having to use my judgement on many issues, but I am able to do this without any need to look over my shoulder and bow to political masters. The constraints in this situation are, firstly, of course, the law and secondly a need to take account of the wider interests of the borough as a whole.

I am appalled by the nonsense of the point-scoring pressures brought by party politics, exampled in particular by the disgraceful and pointless pantomime of Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons.

Whilst Basingstoke council chamber is not quite as awful, there are definitely occasions when quite pointless tribal encounters are pursued. This same tribalism is very evident on many important votes, leading to flawed decisions.

I believe party politics has no place in local government. The interests of residents and the community at large should be the principal drivers of decision-making.

Introduction

I moved to Chineham in 1980 and have now lived in three separate locations within the parish. I have found the area to be well located for most family needs and the abundance of copses offer a wonderful enhancement to the locality.

When I first moved here, Chineham was still a part of Old Basing parish and the "Chineham Development Plan" was just about to move forward. That plan was subject to many changes as time went by – some for the better – and some less so.

Having previously served on Yatton Parish Council in Somerset, I wished to continue with this form of public engagement and so stood for election to Old Basing Parish Council. When Chineham broke off from Old Basing, I became one of the first Chineham Parish Councillors.

In subsequent years the area has changed vastly and two key major events have been the building of a replacement incinerator and the rather sudden introduction of Taylor's Farm into the then emerging Local Plan.

I was first elected to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in 1994. It has proved both frustrating and occasionally rewarding. Working with other councillors, it has been possible to play a part in some of the great local achievements. My year as Mayor served to highlight some really positive local social and commercial enterprise as well as highlighting many aspects still deserving improvement.
